Wednesday night I headed out to The Falcon to meet up with The Fogels, Mr. Robbie Kalinowski, his lady and Virgil's wife, Stephanie for a drink before the Nada Surf show. We were tempted to stay at the bowling alley bar because of the awesome middle-aged cover band... especially with the balding bass player rockin' the bobbing chicken head move all night. But alas, we headed next door to the Gothic Theatre to see the show. I had never seen Nada Surf, but had been a fan since Robbie gave me their CD when he and The Fairlanes stayed at my apt. in Oakland 7 years ago. Jeez, I'm old.
For those of you who don't think you know Nada Surf, you might remember their big single from 1996, Popular. This song is a complete detour from all their music, but I'm sure it paid their rent for a long time. Inside of Love and Always Love are much better songs and representations of their music.
Here are a few shots from the balcony at one of the coolest venues I have been to. The only downside to the show... it was sponsored by Jeep and Dodge. Lame... but that didn't stop Robbie from belting out the lyrics to every single song. That kid is a super fan. During the encore, they did a great cover of the classic Love Will Tear Us Apart. It was a good night with some good kids.
