OH NO HE DIDN'T...

Lakers coach Phil Jackson used... well, we will call it poor judgment this week at a press conference. After the Lakers loss to the Spurs on Tuesday night, Jackson said "We call this a 'Brokeback Mountain' game, because there's so much penetration and kickouts..." Bad idea, dude.

And then during his NBA-forced apology, he made another crack - "If I've offended any horses, Texans, cowboys or gays, I apologize." Damn.

WOO HOO, FINALLY!...

When I saw that Barry "The Juice" Bonds was being indicted this week, it made my day... no, week... no, YEAR!!! The jackass faces four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to investigators probing BALCO, a wide-ranging scandal that implicated several top athletes across different sports. The maximum sentence for perjury is five years while the maximum term for obstruction of justice is 10 years. I hope he gets the maximum sentence and they make an example out of him by taking away his home run title. Sorry Suzi, I told you so.

Nate Frizzell, Eric Otto and Scott Belcastro have a great show of installations and paintings called Heads in the Trees at the project:gallery in LA. I have always been a fan of Otto and his materials, but I think Nate Frizzell's pieces are the ones that shine in this show. They seem to really play off the idea of innocence and our collective memories of childhood.

LANCE HAHN 1967-2007...

Caught off guard... I was quite upset last night when I passed a poster on the street that said "LANCE HAHN MEMORIAL." Somehow, I did not hear about the death of punk pioneer and J Church frontman Lance Hahn. He played a major role in the creation of the San Francisco and Austin punk scenes. Admittedly, I didn't know everything about the band, but I did know of their importance and place in the punk and indie community. I remember seeing them open for Propagandhi in 2001, and thinking how amazing the live show was. Lance and his partner also owned and operated Honey Bear Records.

Believe me when I say that he will be missed deeply.
Pour out a little liquor for the homie this weekend.

Lance passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2007, due to complications from kidney disease. He was much-loved, and his friends and family have planned memorials in San Francisco, California, and Austin, Texas, the details of which are posted below.

The Austin Memorial will take place from 4–8 PM on Sunday, November 18, at The Mohawk (912 Red River, the corner of 10th and Red River, next door to Club de Ville).

TAKIN' ME BACK...

So... from about 5th grade to 9th grade, I spent almost every Saturday night glued to the classic after hours MTV metal show Headbangers Ball. Pretty rad, I know. It was the only place for a metal kid to see the newest videos from all his favorite bands... or just a bunch of poofy-haired guys in leather.

Fast forward to last night. I spent the night watching the bonus DVD that comes with the new Coheed and Cambria record No World For Tomorrow (damn good record, by the way). During the "Making of...", Claudio is recording some vocals and all of a sudden screams out "GRANDMAAAA," in the highest pitch voice possible. Now, for those of you in the metal know, this was a reference to the amazing opening lyric to King Diamond's song Welcome Home. In my younger days, I loved that video. As cheesy as it is... it takes me back. Back to a time when I had a school binder with the words "THE NEW KIDS SUCK!" written as large as possible on the front.

HOW THE HELL...

I saw this on the news last night, and almost lost it! An 810-foot-long container ship crashed into the base of a tower of the Bay Bridge's western span in heavy fog Wednesday, spilling 58,000 gallons of fuel into San Francisco Bay. How the hell is this possible? Apparently, the "heavy fog" tricked the radar that the 65,000 ton tanker had. Thanks for killing marine wildlife and screwing up the beaches, Hanjin Shipping.

I just saw this clip on The Daily Show about the new Jimmy Dean Pancakes and Sausage on a Stick. They are available in original, chocolate chip and blueberry. This "food" is ridiculous... but I am sure that there is someone in the Midwest that is high-fiving a loved one right now.

IN CASE OF ARCADE FIRE...

Arcade Fire made a very clever live video in an elevator for the title track to their latest album, Neon Bible. The album is one of my new favorites. I was on a flight to Seattle a few weeks ago, and it was the perfect soundtrack for a late night flight while staring out the window. Enjoy.

TWO WORDS - HOLY CRAP!...

RVCA (the brainchild of skater/artist Ed Templeton) combines art, music, fashion and popular culture. The clothing line recently opened a retail store here in SF - VASF. This Thursday, the store is having a rock star art show to celebrate. Family Tree is a group show with the art of R.Pimple (a.k.a. TWIST, a.k.a. Ray Fong, a.k.a. Barry McGee), Phil Frost, Pushead and Craig Stecyk. This is one of those rare shows that only happens once in a blue moon. Oh yeah... and Tommy Guerrero is playing a live set.

In related news...
Barry McGee is having a solo show called Advanced Mature Work and is speaking at the Red Cat Gallery in LA later this month.

GIRARD, THE GENIUS...

In 1963, designer Alexander Girard created a series of wooden dolls for his Santa Fe home. Now, those same toys have been re-created and are available at Design Within Reach - which is an ironic name, since the toys are $145 each. Regardless, they are some cool toys.
